We all know what an important celebration Christening is. For the family and the baby, this special occasion will introduce religion and spirituality into the little one’s life. In many aspects, tradition still manages the whole ceremony of baptism, but in some ways, things have changed during the centuries.
Finding the right clothes for your baby boy can prove to be a challenge, especially since it depends on several things.
Back in the days, boys used to wear white christening gowns, the same as girls. In recent years, fashion has changed and boys can wear outfits formed by shirts, trousers, and little accessories, or keep the tradition and wear gowns.

Christening gown
This type of clothing for baby boys is just like a dress with lace or some sort of embroidery. The traditional one is white and about 60-90 cm long as it needs to drape down a little.
The christening gown is often worn with several specific accessories, mainly a bonnet or a cap.
But why do boys wear this kind of clothing?
Well, up until 1900 boys and girls would wear the same thing until the age of 5. After that period, boys would dress in pants and shirts, while girls received dresses. We think that it made the nappy changing easier for the caretakers and the cost of the baby’s clothing was lower since the dress could be worn for a longer period.
Wearing gowns for baptism was nothing out of usual, and the tradition was kept for many, many years.
Also, it was common that the baby gown to be passed on from generation to generation.
Most christening gowns are unisex and can be used both for boys and girls.

Christening Outfits

How to choose an outfit?
There are some factors to take into account when choosing the baby boys’ christening clothes.
- The age – of the baby is under 6 months, you could use an outfit that gives you easy access to change his diaper. If the baby is older, then a suit, a romper or an outfit will go better since he’ll want to walk and crawl.
- The way of the Church – if the christening is being held in a traditional church, then a christening gown could be the better option. But if the church is a modern one, then a suit or whatever pleases you might work best as long as you still follow the rules regarding the color of the clothes.
- Personal taste – of course, this is one of the factors involved in choosing the outfit for the baby. You need to be comfortable with the choice and enjoy the entire ceremony and its meaning.
What to wear after the ceremony?
If the clothes your baby is wearing are comfortable enough, then they can also stay in them after the ceremony is done and the party begins. But some parents want to have a spare outfit for when the family gathers after the baptism.
