Everyone who has a child or knows just a little bit about children, also knows what a bodysuit or a onesie is. So, what is it? A practical item of clothing for children that can be worn just as it is or for an extra layer of warmth during cold seasons and suitable for newborns as well as toddlers.
But when did children start to wear a bodysuit? And how many types of bodysuits are there? When do the little girls wear them and how?
We will answer all these questions in the following article about baby girl bodysuits.
History of bodysuits
As with all the interesting clothing, the bodysuits for baby girls also have a pretty interesting story behind them.
In its beginning, the bodysuit was called a pajama, and was invented in the 17th century as nightwear for adults. After a while, they didn’t use them just for sleeping and the soldiers started wearing them during the Civil War. The bodysuits were made of flannel and kept the soldiers warm. The Victorian Era brought a new development for the bodysuits and it became popular amongst railway workers. Then the gymnasts and the artists took the design and improved it to suit them. Jules Leotard, a French trapeze artist created a new type of bodysuit that allowed freedom of movement for all those who practiced sports.
The most famous person who had something to say about the bodysuit was Winston Churchill. During WWII, he inspired his tailors to make him a romper known as a siren suit. This kind of suit was practical because it allowed people to just put it over whatever nightwear or underwear they had on, and flee even in the middle of the night. And that was a great development for the period.
The romper was made for adults and children altogether, and set the standard for what will be known as the bodysuit or the onesie.
But how did the bodysuit become the main item in a child's wardrobe?
Well, in the 18th Queen Victoria considered that children should be raised as little adults and the clothes should follow the same trend. So she dressed her children, both the boy and the girl, in elaborate dresses and the world took her example. Clothing for kids was not practical at all and extremely hard to put on and wear. After a while, people were sick of these attires and adopted the romper as a replacement for the dresses. After WWII things needed to be rationalized so gone were the fancy dresses and pretty rompers. Instead, kids wore this piece of garment invented by Walter Artzt with a snap in front that he called the Babygro.
And this was the beginning of the modern bodysuit. After mothers and caretakers realized just how easy you can change a diaper with this type of clothing and how easy you can put it on and take it off, the popularity of the bodysuit sparked.

Types of bodysuits
Bodysuits come in different shapes and forms, but there are certain types that we need to mention here.
The main category of the bodysuits is considered the best thing a baby can have in her wardrobe. Most of them are made from cotton which is great for the sensitive skin of the baby. They are absorbent and can open easily. You can change a baby’s diaper without taking the bodysuit off completely.
The bodysuit is great during summer when the weather is warm enough for the baby to only wear this piece of clothing. But it can also be great during colder days when you can use it as an undergarment.

FAQ
Both onesies and bodysuits are one-piece garments made for babies. They are comfortable and cute allowing you to dress them quickly and change their diapers without too much fuss.
