Slips and petticoats were part of a woman’s and girl’s attire back in the days. They used to be worn as undergarments and sometimes, during the ages, they were even transformed into simple dresses by the fashion industry.

About the petticoat
Back in the 18th century, both women and little girls would wear a jupe underneath their dresses. The skirts were oftentimes open in front and the undergarment needed to be highly decorated and even made from the same material.
Over the years the petticoats’ function changed. In the 19th century, it was meant to keep the women and girls warm, to give the skirt structure and hide the legs. They were used as underwear and later on they would have a crinoline skeleton made for them. Made from cotton, linen, or flannel for wintertime, petticoats were strengthened at the hem with horsehair.
French knickers would derive from these petticoats and were popular in the 1920s.
Nowadays petticoats are popular among little girls who want to look like a princess for a party or a school show. They are also worn under a ball gown to support the fabric and make the skirt puffier. Not only they are interesting looking, but they embody elegance and style.

About the slip
Just like the petticoat, the slip has a rich history also. The 1990s provided the fashion industry with a reinterpretation of the slip in the form of a women’s dress. But this piece of clothing was made even in the Middle Ages. They called it a Chemise in France. It was loose-fitting and worn underneath the dresses as an underwear piece. Little girls’ would also wear it but as a nightgown.
In the 1700s the girls’ white slips were made into a dress. Young women would wear them just like a dress and not an undergarments in their close circle of friends. Even Marie Antoinette would do so, therefore transforming it into a trend. The true liberation of women’s constricting fashion design came in the 1900s with the suffrage movement which demanded that women be free of corsets.
This was the moment when the slip became popular. In these modern times, the slips for girls remain with their former use, as an undergarment for some of the dresses children wear from time to time. At pageants and for different kinds of shows, the little girls need to wear elegant and over-the-top gowns. Some of them will be designed in a way that requires a full slip for girls’ wearing the dress.
