Tights are a part of fashion history as much as any other clothing item. They’ve been around, in different shapes and forms, for a long time. Their role was, as it is now, to keep you warm and add an extra layer of beauty to an outfit.

History of thighs
Hosiery, in any form you might think of, has been around since Ancient Egypt. The archeologists found in one of the tombs a pair of well-made socks dated from 500 A.D. That means that legwear is 2000 years older.
But hosiery resembling modern tights began its life along with the first knitted products. In 1598, William Lee invented the first knitted machinery and made the whole process of knitting clothes simpler. In those days, all these new inventions were presented first to the royal family. So, Lee went to Queen Elizabeth I of England with a pair of stockings made of pure silk, but she refused the patent, according to Britannica. But members of the aristocracy paid attention and they liked this new piece of garment so this is how hosiery became famous among the nobility.
If you take a look at some portraits back from those days, you can see men and women wearing stockings and tights with their clothing.
Time passed and stockings became more affordable, still, they were controversial so not many people wore them.
In 1803 they were made as a replacement for petticoats, providing the same amount of coverage but in less time. Still, the dresses were less stifling and allowed women to move freely. That was unacceptable at the time, therefore tights were not mass produced.
They became popular in 1940 when nylon was discovered and made them durable and cheaper than silk ones. But it took another 30 years to become a truly important item in a women’s wardrobe.
Types of tights
Tights come in many shapes and forms depending on the purpose of using them. Little girls use them to look cute with dresses and skirts, but in winter time tights are a means to an end creating that much-needed warmth.
