History of the headband
Headbands are not a recent invention in the fashion world, as a matter of fact, they have a very long history.
Ancient Greek and Roman women used to wear them as hair wreaths, they would also decorate their hair with jewelry and flowers that held the place of a headband.
Their role of decorating women’s hair was replaced with a more practical one at the beginning of the 20th century. The women used to wear headaches bands, the name is self-explanatory, and in France, they called them “bandeau”, lacy things sometimes adorned with ribbons or feathers.
Not only it is a fashion item, but the headband also has a long history of cultural use, like for religious purposes.
Launched as a fashion statement in 1920, the headband featured in both silent movies and was depicted in novels like The Great Gatsby.
1930 brings a more practical use to the classic headband and the ads of the time feature women wearing jeans and belts, and also a headband while working. It was a big part of changing perspectives when it came to women’s role in society. The most famous headband of the time pictured Rosie the Riveter in the Westinghouse poster during WWII.
After the war, the headband became a decorative item once more. Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and Jackie O wore headbands as part of the entire outfit.
The 70’ and the 80’ brought a new sense of style to the old hair accessory and integrated it into a sports context along with spandex.
Nowadays, headbands are whatever we wish them to be.
Wearing them as accessories at a wedding, for religious purposes, whenever we need our hair to stay in one place, or just for the fun of it.

Headbands are pieces of an outfit that go on the head for a complete look. For baby girls, headbands are ways of completing a look, but for older girls, they will keep the hair from falling on their faces, and even keep them warm. If the little girl wears her hair down, then the headband has a practical purpose. But she can also wear it if the hair is in a ponytail or an updo for a stylish outcome.
The role of the headband is to keep the hair away from the face and eyes. Depending on the fabric, the headband’s purpose can also be to keep the ears warm. If they are made of wool, cotton, or fleece the headbands can be worn during warmer winter days. Little girls usually wear headbands because they look cute and complete an outfit. Another good purpose is dynamic activities. The headbands made of terry cloth can absorb sweat and humidity during sports.
This type of accessory has many names. A headband can also be called a hair band, a headpiece, a tiara or diadem if it’s made of little stones and metal, or a bandeau. Depending on the style and the purpose, this piece of clothing is named differently.
The popularity of the headband never disappeared because they were never out of style. Not for adults, and not for little girls. Styles have changed, and the way they were paired with different kinds of clothing changed, but the headbands were always popular.Their versatility is one of the reasons they are so popular. You can pair them with so many things, with sports outfits, elegant outfits, extravagant outfits, and even with casual outfits. You can wear the fancy ones at parties, the terry cloth ones when you are moving around and practicing some kind of sports, a padded one to school. It is the perfect accessory that goes with every age and style. You can see here what kind of headbands we have for little girls.
As with every fashion item, this one can also be just a little controversial. If you wear the headband every day, or if the headband is tight, it can cause the hair to recede a little. But if you wear them once in a while, paired with an outfit or with a purpose, then it’s fine to have one.Wearing a headband while doing physical exercise is great. Not only does it keep the hair out of your face, but it also absorbs the sweat, and keeps you cool and looking fashionable.
